What are you in bondage to? In Lk.4:18 Jesus said; “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives… to set at liberty them that are bruised (crushed),” By definition; deliverance is either the act of delivering someone or it is the state of being delivered. 2Cor.3:17 “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (freedom).”
The worst form and type of bondage is that of being demon possessed, like the demoniac of the Gadarenes in Mark 5, but there are many other types of bondages, all of which the Lord Jesus came to set us free from. Know that God doesn’t us to be in bondage to anything or anyone. In Luke 11:20 Jesus said, “if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.”
The gospel is the gospel of the kingdom, His kingdom. If there is no kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, then there is NO true gospel, but one watered down without power to change lives. … your life will only be changed when it comes under His Lordship…
Rom.6:16 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” V.18 “Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” If you yield yourself to sin, to the influence of evil one, then you place yourself under his authority and he will have control in your life.
Christianity is about relationships, a relationship with the heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ through fellowship and communion, not religiosity and being religious in action and deed. You don’t have a relationship with Him because you go to church and do religious things, but because you have fellowship with Him through worship, His Word and prayer and you are exercising your spirit to hear and know His voice so that you can follow and obey Him and know what He wants you to do.
Gal.1:4 “Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:” 2Tim.4:18 “And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
You cannot walk in fellowship with God and walk in sin. The religious crowd that says you can live in sin and still have a relationship with Christ, because you made a profession of faith, but you just won’t be walking in fellowship with Him, need to look those two words up in a dictionary. You can’t have and maintain a relationship with anyone without fellowship.
Try it in your marriage and see how far you get with your spouse. You can’t have an intimate relationship without fellowship, which means you talk to Him and you allow Him to talk to you. Yes? Isa.59:2 “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”
But Jesus said in Jn.8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” You will be clean, you will be of a truth, really free. This is an absolute, not a “maybe”. This is not just speaking of being free of demonic oppression or demonic possession, but free from all addictions and anything that you don’t have control over in your life.
1John 3:8 “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” Bondages can be spiritual, but they can also be physical or emotional. You can be bound by a soul tie created from an ungodly relationship. You can have emotional hurts and scars that come from divorce, death, physical abuse, mental abuse, and then there is that which comes from demonic activity because of sins against God, as being involved with occult practices or witchcraft in the family.
Many are bound by fear, fear of dying, fear of the unknown, fear of living, fear of everything. How can you live victorious in two different and opposite circumstances, in abundance or in lack?
Others are bound by unforgiveness. This will stop you from receiving the blessing of God; stop you from receiving healing or deliverance. If you want forgiveness and healing, you have to be willing to forgive.
You can be in bondage to one with a controlling spirit of witchcraft. You can be in bondage to something that is just of your flesh. You can be in bondage and the devil have nothing to do with it, it is just your flesh still being married to the things of the devil and not wanting to stop because your flesh has a mind, a will of its own.
When Christ sets us free, it is not freedom to selfishness and seeking our own will, desires and lusts, but freedom from them. He sets us free from ourselves and the desires and lusts of the flesh so that we can serve Him and be a blessing to others. We have not been made free to sin, but "free from sin" according to Romans 6:18.
Jesus came to set the captives free, but many in His day were not just in bondage to demons powers, they were in bondage to man-made religion and doctrines of devils that put them into bondage and took away their spiritual freedom and liberty to serve God in joy and happiness. God never intended for you faith or religion to put you into bondage and more slavery, just exchanging one form of slavery for another, but that you might serve him with gladness and joy and rejoicing of spirit and there is none of that in religion and being merely religious. Today many need to be set free from the things they learned and were taught by religion that they can walk in the freedom and liberty of Christ.
Ephesians 2:2-3 “Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.” Those who walk in the flesh live to satisfy selfish desires and greed. The live for the satisfaction and pleasure of their flesh. The very nature we were born with was a fallen nature because of sin, totally affected and corrupted by sin and that is why your flesh must be taken to
Calvary and must die.
Galatians 4:19 tells you the works of your flesh, all the sinful things that men do without any help from the devil, but from the lusts of their own flesh because we are sinners by nature. Some people try to put a devil behind every doorknob and around every corner, but they give the devil and his imps far more credit than they deserve and magnify his power and ability beyond that which he has. The devil is NOT omnipresent or omnipotent, only God is. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil and that includes the works of your fleshly nature; that you would no longer live for the lusts of your flesh.
1Peter 4:1-2 “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.” Rom.13:14 “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” Gal.5:16-18, 25 “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law…(which has to do with bondage, if your under the law your under the law of sin and death, the end result of sin which is bondage, bondage to sin and its results) 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” This is where there is freedom and liberty in Christ.
When you can die to your flesh and walk by the spirit of God for “where the spirit of the lord is there is liberty.” (2Cor.3:17) Verse 18 goes on to say, “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” Where the spirit is ministering in your life, there is liberty. Where the spirit is ministering in your life, there is freedom, the Greek word for freedom is (metamorphoo), there is a transformation, a metamorphosis taking place in your life and there is an ever increasing glory, a transformation into glory, to the place of unveiled faces, as Moses was in the presence of God, without the veil that he used to cover his face when he was in front of the people because of the glory of God that came upon him.
To know Christ is to know the spirit. To know Christ is to have the spirit. To have the sprit is to have life and freedom for when the spirit of God comes into your life, He will transform your life and you will not be the same as you were yesterday and this is an every increasing change as you are taken from glory to glory, more of Jesus and being more life Him and walking and living in His presence, where there is His power, liberty and freedom.
The Spirit of God comes to fill you that he might transform you and make you like Jesus, make you the kind of person He was and is. Jesus was never enslaved by the law like the Pharisees, as their slavery to their concepts and ideas of what it meant to keep the Sabbath, making the law which was spiritual, into physical slavery for the people. When you are filled with and led by the spirit of God, then you can serve God in freedom and in love without bondage to law. Then the glory that is in Christ will continually increase in you and I as we progress in the experience of life and freedom that is given by Christ and by the Spirit now living within you.
And for those legalists who would put you into bondage to law and suggest that being freed from the law or not under the law of Moses means that you would be free from morality or moral character could not be further form the truth. Here Paul is teaching just the opposite. The reality and truth is that morality cannot and does not come by the law, but only by the gift of the spirit of God who lives in freedom from the law for the power of God alone, the power of faith in God and His word alone can bring a man to righteousness and can produce in your life the fruit of the spirit which cannot come by the keeping of law.
As you can see bondage and deliverance is a broad subject and covers a lot more than you’re being free from demonic oppression or possession. Jesus came to set the captives free, but many in His day were not just in bondage to demons powers, they were in bondage to man-made religion and doctrines of devils that put them into bondage and took away their spiritual freedom and liberty to serve God in joy and happiness. God never intended for your faith or religion to put you into bondage and more slavery, just exchanging one form of slavery for another, but that you might serve him with gladness and joy and rejoicing of spirit and there is none of that in religion. Today many need to be set free from the things they learned and were taught by religion that they can walk in the freedom and liberty of Christ.
Romans 14:17-18 “For the
.” kingdom of God is -righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men
Some of us are in bondage to ideas or things we learned, images in our minds. But God wants us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds…
The children of Israel came out of Egypt but were still in bondage in their minds, they were still slaves in their thinking and so they did not think or act as free men and so they were not able to go in and possess the land. God had to wait for a new generation, that weren’t born in slavery, that didn’t know slavery and think as slaves so that He could give them the promised land.
Eph.1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:” God wants to give us all the blessings of heaven but He can’t do it if we still think as slaves. We can only receive them by being raised up with Christ and seated with Him in the heavenlies where we belong and where our citizenship is.
Eph.2:6-6 “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.” Have you been seated with Christ, to rule and reign in life and walk in the power and victory of the life of Christ, free from all bondages and things that keep you from the fullness of the liberty and freedom of Christ?
