Deliverance - Pt.1

The last session was our general introduction to the topic of deliverance. Our main texts are John 8:36 and Lk.4:18. Jn.8:36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” Lk.4:18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captivesto set at liberty them that are bruised (crushed),” for this is the standard and what Jesus did and so what He has called and sent forth His servants to do. In John 20:21 Jesus said, “as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.”

Preaching the gospel of the kingdom, of His reign and authority as the Son of Man and Son of God, preaching deliverance to the captives and liberty to the bruised is what Jesus did and so what we as the body of Christ are supposed to do today in our world. In Mark 16, Jesus commission to His followers was to preach the gospel, to cast our devils and speak with new tongues. That will set the captive free.

The first thing that we must establish is that deliverance is only for the saved. First the individual must believe the gospel and repent. We have already established that repentance is a life changing decision and not just some words that someone repeats after another called the “sinners prayer” which means nothing in itself.

Matt.12:43-45When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.”

The reason that deliverance is only for the true believer is because there is no way that the unsaved can restrain the reentering again of demonic intervention in his life and soul. It is meaningless for one to cast the devil out of a person who does not turn to Christ and become born again of the spirit of God. You may temporarily sweep the house clean, but there is no spiritual ‘girding of the loins’  or applying of the blood of Christ to the ‘lintel of the doorpost’ of the heart to restrain the return of Satan in even greater numbers.

So to permanently remove the demonic activity and working in a person’s life, he must be born again according to John chapter 3.

First we must establish that a demon is a spirit without a body as can be seen in the verse we just read in Matthew chapter 12. We will not discuss here where demons came from as this is not a study of Lucifer’s kingdom and realm of authority but Christ’s authority over them all. Because the demon is a spirit without a body, he must have something living to manipulate and work, to express himself and do his evil deeds.

So, demons want and seek a living body, a human or animal temple in which to dwell. God on the other hand needs something dead that he can resurrect.

It is the cross that defeats the devil. For God to resurrect you spiritually, you must first go to Calvary and there identify with His death, and there crucify and die to your flesh, its will and desires. Gal.2:20I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Notice, to live so that Christ is living in and through you begins with “I am crucified”, Paul said in 1Cor.15:31, “I die daily.” In Lk.9:23 Jesus said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

What is your cross? That is a understood by few Christians. Your cross is not your spouse, your sickness, your job or whatever. Your cross is simply where your will and the will of God come in conflict and you have to lay down your will that you can do His will. That is Jesus in the Garden when Jesus prayed, “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt(Matt.26:39). In Matt.16:24 Jesus said; “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” It’s progressive. You can’t follow him until you have taken up your cross, the will of God that your flesh doesn’t like. An you can’t take up your cross until you deny your self will and desires. It’s simple, but difficult for us to do until we learn to walk in the spirit and give no place to our flesh (read Romans 13:14 and Galatians 5:16).

The key to the victorious overcoming life in Christ is dying to your flesh by taking it to the cross, daily. True freedom comes from a heart that cries out to God in desperation, being at the end of self and self efforts and self works. When you come to the end of self, then you are where God wants you to be and you are ready for a miracle of deliverance.

Our main purpose here is not dealing with the issue of the demon possessed; because that is dealing with the unsaved and so I will leave that issue to deal with the issue of demon oppression. One who is demonized has demons that operated around their lives, yes that of Christians, and they build strongholds that stop the flow of God’s presence and abundance. These strongholds must be broken and destroyed. This can only happen when the desire for freedom in your life is greater than the desire that caused the stronghold of the enemy. You have to be crucified with Christ and resurrected to newness of life in Him. You must learn the reality of Matt.6:33, seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

1Pet.5:8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” The word devour means to drown or swallow and also describes what the Red Sea did to the pursuing Egyptians. Satan wants to completely drown or swallow up our testimony for Christ so that we do not have a viable witness for Christ in our lives.

The Christian heart that is the most fertile soil for the working of demonic activity are those who become distraught; those who become distressed and backsliding in heart who are separated from a daily walk with Christ that is yielded to Him. Let me give some definitions.

*To be distraught is characterized by being mentally distracted and unable to keep focus, being agitated with doubt; mental conflict or mental confusion. Unbelief and being double minded is the devils playground. One who is distraught usually behaves irrationally when affected by a deep emotion such as fear or grief. It is easy for the enemy to work in the mind of such a person.

*To be distressed is to be under great strain or difficulty, to be troubled and worried in your mind. Today we have what is called distressed clothing, clothing that is marred, ripped and made to look used and even dirty in the manufacturing process and somehow making it more desirable to some people who think it’s the thing and thereby more expensive than if the garment looked fresh, new and clean.

To backslide is: to fall off; to apostatize; to grow cold, to gradually turn away from the faith and practice of Christianity.

I hope these definitions help you understand the condition of the mind that is distraught, distressed and backslidden and made into a playground for the working of demons because it is full of doubt and unbelief.

ROMANS 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice (speaking of the life you live daily for you have been bought with the blood of Jesus and you belong to Him), holy (for without holiness no man shall see the Lord), acceptable unto God (It is only Christ in you that is acceptable to the Father), which is your reasonable service (of worship, for all sacrifices are a part of your worhsip). And be not conformed to this world (don’t look like, act like, imitate and be in the image of the world but instead we are to be conformed to the image of Christ): but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind (which is to change in nature and character so as to make you fit and acceptable for a totally new purpose in life. It is to make the outward man like the inward spirit of Christ), that ye may prove (or demonstrate) what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

It is not enough just that our minds be renewed by doctrine and teaching and the logos of the Word of God, the written words of God on the surface as we read them.

Eph.4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” True righteousness and holiness is the by-product of having your minds renewed by the spirit, walking and being led by the spirit of God, which makes you a son of God.

Rom.8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Not those who walk in the letter of the word, but in the spirit of the life that comes when the word becomes flesh to you and power in your life, when it becomes rehma, life giving and real, life within you and no longer just doctrine and theology.

This is the abundant life that Jesus came to give us. This is the meaning of John 10:10 when Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” That isn’t religion, or doctrines, but life from the spirit within you, flowing out of your life so that you walk and talk and show the world who Jesus is within you. “Christ in you the hope of glory”. Christ in you, hope and glory. When Christ is living in and through you by the power of the spirit, then he becomes your glory, because you share in His glory. Then you are being transformed from glory into glory by the spirit of the lord.

Eph.6:11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” The Greek word for wiles, methodeias, from which comes the word "method" and it speaks of his lying in wait, to take you by surprise, off guard. But it is your responsibility to be alert and on guard against the enemy and to arm yourself against his methods of attack. The reason the enemy can lie in wait for you is because he knows you, he knows your weaknesses and your personality traits and habits and by his wiles he is able to cause circumstances that will separate you from walking in the spirit and keep you in your flesh, where he can work and trouble you. Remember, Satan is a liar and a deceiver and that’s where his power lies to work in your life, but getting you to believe his lie over God’s truth, just as he did Eve in the garden.

The purpose of this teaching is that you might know of a surety that you can be free because God wants you free and has provided the remedy that you might be free. Therefore, for you not to be free; is sin. For a Christian to be dominated and controlled by anything other than the spirit of Christ; is sin. For you to be controlled by another person with a controlling spirit, to be controlled by a sin habit, to be controlled by a substance like tobacco, or to be controlled by the dictates of your flesh; is sin because Christ has provided for your freedom and told you to be free and not live under any yoke of bondage.

Gal.5:1Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” That means any bondage by anyone or anything, physical, spiritual or religious doctrine. Christ has made us free so that we might live free. Hallelujah! For a Christian to be conquered by the flesh, the lusts and desires of the flesh, is to move from the dimension of being spiritual to being carnal and finally to being conquered.

We are doing this study that you might be free of the things that can bind you through your flesh, your natural fallen human nature, and that you might learn to have a daily walk with Christ in such fullness that will keep you free. Such that the only explanation for your victorious life and the grace upon your life because you are free, free from fears, bondages, habits and the things that haunt and devoir the lives of others, is because your belong to Christ; making your life a testimony of His grace and power.

All we have said so far was to tell you that you can be free, you must be free, you will be free, in Jesus name! How! Rev.12:11And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.” Satan is defeated. He was defeated by Christ 2000 years ago and He can be defeated in our lives today. It is not enough to get free only to be entangled again in a yoke of bondage. God wants us to stay free and live free so we can be a testimony of His grace and power to those around us.

God has made provision for our escape from the grasp of the enemy and next we will start sharing those provisions. Let us separate ourselves from Him and know the fullness of Christ’s life living in and through us.

Close: John 8:36; “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.Don't Resist His Call to You

Why do people resist the call of the Holy Spirit? Why do they keep on ignoring Christ and go on living in misery and pain? Mostly because they are stubborn.

God is not mad at any sinner--whether drug addict, alcoholic, homosexual, gambler, massage parlor operator, adulterer or otherwise. The only thing that angers God is premeditated resistance--trying to stop Him from getting through to a person. I have two children, but I can't help either of them if they won't even listen to me. You can't help anybody who shuts you out. And God can't work a miracle for anyone who refuses His love.

When God has done something for you, when God has answered prayer, brought healing or deliverance, then you need to biblically confess it before men and seal it, so the enemy doesn’t come and rob you of it. This is a trick of the enemy. God does something for you, the enemy tells you, be quiet, keep it to yourself, you don’t have to tell anyone, after all, what if it doesn’t stick, what if it comes back on you, what if you fall and sin again, you’ll make a fool of yourself. If you tell others then they will think you unspiritual, a hypocrite, a liar.

You have to remember the ways of the accuser, el diablo. Later he will come and lie and try to talk you out of it and tell you that God didn’t really do it for you. Seal it with your confession and faith and don’t give the enemy a place to work in secret in your life. You need to openly confess what Christ has done for you if you want to keep it and not loose it.  … (continued)

Many have been talked out of their blessing, talked out of their healing, talked out of their deliverance by a lying spirit because they would never confess publicly what God did for them.
