The tree is one; the Holy Spirit, the fruits are nine. You canít just pick one fruit to bear or have your favorite and think you donít need the rest thereof. These fruits are the character and nature of God. We want favorite fruit, like, you now, Iím just a loving person, but you have no joy, peace, self-control Ö.† No, you either manifest all or none at all because itís one tree with diff fruit. You say, ďIím just sweet,Ē well maybe youíre just a wimp. There are plenty of sweet people that you better not turn your back on. So you ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and take control of your life. Question is this. Do you want to be a tree in an orchard for God? Do you want Him to bring anyone he wants into his orchard to your tree to partake of your fruit, no matter who they are, what color they are, class, nationality they are, whatever. Are you willing to let him bring to you anyone, a drug addict, a homosexual, and ask you to feed them, or do you say, no God let me give you a list of the kind of people Iím willing for you to send to partake of my fruit. We have to make a decision. Do you want to hang out with Jesus, no matter who he brings to your life? Do you really want to be a channel for God to live his life through? Jesus ministered to all people everywhere he went and wasnít choosy. He laid hands on the leper, talked to the prostitute, went to the tax collectors house.
John 5:2 ďEvery branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.Ē Once you understand about fruit trees and grafted branches this is simple. To graft, you cut a place in the tree, cut a branch and put it into that slit into the tree. God said Adam your lonely and look like you need someone. So Iím going to cut a piece out of your side and graft a woman so she can come from you. On the cross, the soldier used a spear to cut a whole into the side of Jesus so we could be grafted into Him. We were not a part of the natural tree.
Also not all grafts take root. Some come to church, enjoy it, but something is missing. They think they are a branch but have never taken root. If it doesnít take root, then the life of the vine doesnít get into the branch and it will not bear fruit. Eventually it will hang down and fall off. Any branch that doesnít bear fruit, he takes away. If you play church and Christian but have not born fruit, you are missing what itís all about; you need Jesus in your life. If He is in your life, then the Spirit will bear this fruit.
There are 3 that are personal, 3 are toward men, man-ward, and 3 toward God or god-ward. God is constantly pruning His tree. The grape vine tries to keep going to the ground. The vine dresser, washes and picks up the vine so it doesnít get mildewed and get sick from being in the dirt and water. He picks it up, waters it and prunes it and sets it up so that it can grow healthy and bear fruit. God does that to us by His Word. His word is sharper than a 2 edged sword. Godís spirit can daily prune us by his word. But you have to get into his word daily. But most donít want that either. If you continue to bear fruit, he will keep pruning so you can bear more fruit, better fruit. Many people go to church and never bear fruit. Others bear some fruit and still others bear abundant fruit. But in the process they has to be shaken and pruned.
John15:3 ďNow ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.Ē We decide how much pruning and shaking will take place in our lives that we can bear fruit for God. When you decide you want to bear more fruit, you have to spend more time in the word and in his presence so the Spirit can work in your life. Then you wonít have to go to school to learn to be a witness, your life will be a living witness and people will see the fruit in your life. They will wonder how you can not be anxious or fearful when everyone else is because of layoffs, disasters, or whatever. They see you are calm, they see your patience, your faith; they see you donít fall apart like others, and they will come to you. If the word abides in you, you will ask what you want and it will be done. How would we live if we really believed that word? He says that when the word abides in you, you will be bearing fruit and God can trust you and give you what you ask for. Some things God just canít trust you with, so your prayer isnít answered. Other times prayer isnít answered† because we ask for self, for the wrong reasons and with the wrong motives and God isnít obligated to answer such prayers (1 John 5:14-15).
John 15:8 ďHerein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.Ē When you bear fruit, God is honored. When you tell others of Jesus, when you win a soul, He gets the glory. The Holy Spirit does the work and you take no credit. It is not ďI saved some many, I healed so manyĒ but God did this for His glory and is worth to received all the honor and glory. Verse 9 ďAs the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.Ē If there is no fruit in your life, then you may need to truly get born again. So many in church never bear fruit, because they never really repented and got filled with the Spirit of God. The reality is in the fruit. You can tell a tree by its fruit if you canít in any other way. I donít know what certain fruit trees look like without fruit on it, and you canít tell a Christian without fruit. A true Christian will always bear fruit, the fruit of the Holy Spirit, the fruit of their relationship with Christ.
Matthew 7:16-20 ďYe shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.Ē It is first the natural and then the spiritual. You can understand spiritual things through and by the natural and here Jesus was talking about men and the fruit of their lives. The verses preceding and following this passage say it all. Verse 15 says, ďBeware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.Ē Beware of false religious leaders, religious pretenders and hypocrites. You can know them by looking at the fruit of their lives. Then He drives His point home in Verse 21; ďNot every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.Ē It isnít enough to go to church, be religious and call Jesus Lord, you have to be obedient to His Word, you have to hear and obey His voice. He said, ďMy sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:Ē (John 10:21). The fruit of your relationship with Him is show in your hearing and obeying His voice, which is following Him.
Ephesians 5:9 ď(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)Ē James 3:18 ďAnd the fruit of righteousness ÖĒOne of the definitions of the fruit of the Spirit is righteousness. It is right standing with God. It has nothing to do with us, but all to do with Him. Fruit of righteousness! Until you understand that you are in right standing with God, not knowing if you are saved or will do to heaven if you died, you wonít bear fruit. It is then doing right because you are in right standing. We produce fruit for one reason, that God be glorified. If those you minister to just praise you, oh, what a loving person, then something is wrong. They should say, Ďpraise Godí and not praise you. A lot of Ďlovingí and kind or nice people are going to hell. Others give lots of money away but donít know God.
1 John 2:6 ďHe that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.Ē If you live under the control of the Holy Spirit and show the fruit of the Holy Spirit you will walk like Jesus walked. You will be a living witness; you will reach out to anyone and love everyone, just like Jesus did. Until we get to that place, that it doesnít matter who they are, what they look like, what they smell like, etc, and not love them like your best friend, then you are not walking in that fruit of God and love of God. He went to the most unlikely people, the outcasts and rejects of society.
1 John 4:12 ďNo man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.Ē His love is brought to maturity and completeness in us by our walking in love. If you have aught against someone else, you are not walking in love. If there is someone you canít and havenít forgiven, they control your life and cut off the flow of Godís life from yours and will keep you from being happy and overcoming and keep you from heaven. Until you forgive others their trespasses against you, no matter what they have done to you, Godís hands are tied and you canít live and abide in Jesus and have His best, His provision, His protection and all that comes from abiding in Him, as a part of your life. He will not accept unforgiveness because he loves us without condition, except this one thing, we must forgive all of all, as He offers us free and unconditional forgiveness of all if we will do the same. If we do not do this we will be a bare tree in an orchard of fruit, and eventually, you will get cut off and die.
We have to decide, what will it be? Check up on yourself. What are you full of, and what are you lacking or empty of. What fruit did you manifest today and what fruit were you lacking today? What fruit did you show when trouble or problems came up? What did you show when you were challenged, when you were cut off on the road, when things went wrong at work, or with the car. Were you walking in the flesh so much you didnít bear any fruit for Jesus? What fruit did you produce when you were thinking wrong thoughts, when you were watching TV, when you got upset at someone for doing something you didnít like? You donít have to cross the ocean to be a missionary; you are a missionary where ever you live and work and are. The question is, when others look at your life, what kind of epistle are they reading and what fruit are they seeing? If you profess to belong to Christ, others are watching you, listening to you, reading your life and looking at your fruit to determine if you are real and really different, or just religious.
May we walk in the Spirit and live by the Spirit that we might bear the fruit of the Spirit that Christ might be glorified in and through our lives, which become a living sacrifice unto Him (Romans 12:1-2) and a part of what makes our worship, true worship for Jesus said those who worship Him, true worshippers, worship in spirit and in truth. The lives they live is part of their worship because they walk and a abide in the truth, in Christ and they bear fruit that shows their life is ďyour life is hid with Christ in GodĒ (Colossians 3:3).
