The American Uncivil War
The U.S. Presidential election of 1860 was quite a controversial one. For years, the nation had been embroiled in a bitter debate over the issue of states' rights and the morality of slavery. That debate turned into a shooting war soon after the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln, took the oath of office in 1861. He won the election, however, his victory had polarized the nation into opposing camps and set off a chain of events whose reverberations can still be felt today.
Brother was pitted against brother as North and South clashed for over four dark and bloody years - no doubt the darkest period in American history to date. Yet, that dismal era in American history may soon have a worthy rival.
Today in America, there is another domestic war raging between two distinct factions. This one may never result in the use of rifles or cannon, but inflamed passions are just as acute and, consequently, the carnage will be no less devastating. This uncivil war is for the hearts and minds of the American people and, in my opinion, will determine the immediate future of the United States.
The gulf between the two camps has existed for decades but the severity of this rift and the militancy of those who oppose the principles upon which this nation was founded was brought to light in dramatic and gut-wrenching fashion during the controversial election of November 2000.
Like the election of 1860, the Republican candidate won and like 1860, the outcome was a nation split right down the middle. The difference this time, however, is the political distinctions cannot be designated as North or South, blue or gray. This time your next-door neighbor may be the one who hates everything you believe in.
Now with the advent of war, those who oppose conservatism and I dare say the Judeo-Christian foundational values of this country have taken to the streets in the guise of "war protesters." Yet, if one observes these "peace" activists closely, you will clearly see that, not of all of them, but most of them are protesting President Bush, conservatives and Israel - not the war! There are even some now calling for Bush to resign or be impeached.
The American Enemy Within
These "peace" rallies are often organized by international groups who have a mutual hatred for America and Israel. Their ranks include Hollywood liberals, media, anarchists, communists, socialists and my personal favorite, "Psychotherapists For Social Reform."
They carry signs that proclaim "Bush: The Real Butcher of Baghdad" or "Bush, Blair, CIA - How many children have you killed today?" I'd be interested to know how these same people feel about abortion. We know that most of them are very pro-abortion, even radical pro-abortionists. I'd also like to know where were these protesters when Clinton was bombing Sarajevo WITHOUT UN RESOLUTIONS? Let's face it. They are moral hypocrites with an anti-conservative, anti-Christ agenda.
Yet for me, the truly disturbing aspect of this so-called anti-war movement is the fact that, along side the Martin Sheens and Al Sharptons of the world, march Islamic extremists who routinely call for Israel's and America's destruction. Odd bedfellows or not?
These self-proclaimed American "patriots" are perfectly willing to defend a known tyrant and murderer at the risk of our national security. Our greatest enemy is indeed within our own borders. They hate or God, our Christian foundations and heritage, even or freedom of speech and religion. They want to stop the freedoms of the Godly and stop their voice and cries against evil and promote the freedoms of the wicked. They call evil, good and good, evil. They say one who speaks out against some evil as homosexuality as sin, that person is homophobic, a hate monger and denounce us, spewing out hatred and at the same time defending their right to spew that hate as righteous and themselves as without wrong; while it is they who hate. They accuse the godly of the evil and hate that is in their own hearts.
The Other America
The other faction within the country - diametrically opposed to these leftist extremists, supports the President and the war on terror. This camp is composed of conservatives of all types, not necessarily Christian. Moreover, within this camp are those of us who understand that this war is, in reality, being orchestrated by Heaven and not Washington. It was God that raised up President Bush because of the cries of the godly and that he would carry out God’s will for our time. God knew that the attack of 9/11 2001 was going to happen before the election of 2000. God graciously gave us a president with faith and strength of character for such a time as this, one that doesn’t run the country by opinion polls or what the detractors think. God raised up our president and it is God that has decided to depose of Saddam Hussein. God raises up and puts down leaders. God is the one who bring war and caused war to end and brings peace. God declared all these things and that there is a time for war and a time for peace. All that is required for evil men to rule and do evil is that good men do nothing. The attitude of the French and others today against this war is no different that they were about Hitler. They tried to pacify him and look what it got them, a greater devastation and a greater war than if they had dealt with him sooner, before they had no choice. And where would France be today had it not been for America coming to their aid? They are hypocrites in bed with Saddam because of the financial business they were doing with him, illegally against the UN sanctions they helped create as a part of the Security Council.
The fact that President Bush issued his ultimatum to Saddam at the start of Purim or "lots" (read Esther) is anther thing that convinces me that the God of Israel is in control of this operation. (Incidentally, Gulf War I ended on Purim 1991).
Therefore, it seems to me that the battle is truly between good and evil. It isn’t about America and Iraq. It’s about God and Israel. I believe we are seeing God's agenda unfolding before us and He has chosen to use this nation and our allies, at least for now, as His sword of vengeance.
Meanwhile, the Adversary is rallying his minions to rail against those who would serve the purposes of God. If this is accurate, the division within our country is going to grow even more distinct and more uncivil as God's end-time plan proceeds. We are at war both here and abroad.
I should point out, however, that our true enemies are not those who march in protest, or those who fight for Saddam Hussein. Our true enemies are the principalities and spirits who control those who would do evil and oppose good (Ephesians 6:12).
The Resolve To Stand
I'm sure that you've gathered by now that I support Mr. Bush's efforts in Iraq because I believe that Operation Iraqi Freedom is a continuation of the War on Terror he declared in 2001. Since that time, I have said that, IF he followed through on the pledge to wage war on terrorists and all those that harbor and give aid to terrorists, he would be bound to deal with despotic regimes such as Iraq and Syria just to name a few. It seems that Mr. Bush is doing just that, at least so far. Syria you will note also was trying to aid Saddam and help his troops fight against ours.
This is not to say that I agree with everything Mr. Bush says and does. I certainly don't share his opinion about prospects for peace in the Middle East especially where a Palestinian state is concerned. I believe that he is making the wrong decision in this case; possibly because of bad advice he is listening too. I say that because I don’t agree with the opinions of some of those in his cabinet. He has people who are divided on many issues, of which this is one. He may not always make the right choice, just like you and I don’t always make the right choice because we are human. We can only pray for him to make right decisions, as I believe he has concerning the war with Iraq. What I am saying is that I respect his resolve in this particular matter. I respect the fact that he is a man of integrity and morals who is trying to do the best he knows and I believe that God will use him for His own purposes and will in bringing about His agenda in this world through President Bush.
Even the media has acknowledged his determination. In the March 17th edition of TIME, a brief article entitled, His Lonely March declares that, "Bush would love as much support as possible against Iraq, but in the end he requires only his own resolve." It is this resolve that has polarized the nation.
Lincoln displayed the same determination during the American Civil War and met with similar results. Lincoln's resolve to preserve the Union created enemies both in the North and South. Many in his own party, even his own cabinet, despised him and felt the U.S. should just let the South go her own way. Of course, Lincoln's enemies in the South felt the very same way. Lincoln felt otherwise.
In all the accounts I have read about Lincoln, I have found no definitive reason to explain his unwavering resolve to preserve the Union, even though it meant bloodshed. Perhaps it was because, like his namesake the biblical Abraham, he was chosen for that specific task. Lincoln was no saint by any means, but who can doubt he served God’s purposes if one believes that God is in control of this world and the nations thereof and that God has a role for the United States in the end times?
Likewise, I am convinced that God is using our President at this time to lead our nation against Islamic terrorism. His resolve to do so is making him plenty of enemies abroad and at home. Quite frankly, that convinces me further that he is doing the right thing. The devil and his minions don’t like it and they are fighting with all they have.
As I stated earlier, I certainly do not agree with all of his policies, but I - you - we - must understand that if God did raise him up for this time, it was to serve His purposes not ours. It is God's agenda that is paramount. Sometimes, as believers, we think things should happen a certain way and when it doesn't, we question. His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts, so we need to pray that our President Bush will be led by the hand of God. I say that I don’t think trying to make a Palestinian state is a good idea because I know Biblically that it can and will never work. It will never resole the issues and will not stop them in their desire and determination to destroy Israel. We have to be honest about the fact that the Palestinians do not just want a state. That will not stop or pacify them, no more than giving Hitler a state in Europe pacified and stopped his march to take over all of Europe. The goal of the Palestinians is to destroy Israel and all Jews. Period! They have said so many times and in many ways. Why do we not believe them? It is either than many in our government are eternal optimists, thinking they can change the leopards spots or the simply also agree with the Palestinians and other radical Muslims, as Saddam and ben Laden and want to destroy Israel. However, I know that our President is not among those and that he is honorable and just and wanting to do what seems to be best for all involved and to really bring peace. I am just saying that it is futile and will never work. There will be no lasting peace for Israel until the Prince of Peace comes. However, there is a scripture that does point to the possibility that there could possibly be two states there for a very brief time. But whatever our President does, I believe that as we keep praying, he will do what the Lord puts in his heart to do that will be for His own purposes in these end times. Jesus is Lord and Lord over all and Lord over our circumstances and Lord over this war against terrorism. His Word forefold the terrorist attack of 9/11/2001. Within His Word in what is called Bible codes, is all the details of the attack of 9/11; so we know that God is fulfilling His Word exactly and specifically. We also know that the fall of the towers was to be a catalyst to start sifting the nations (Isaiah 30:25, 27-28). Other scriptures also talk about this end time sifting that would take place. (Haggai 2:6-7; Amos 9:1,9)
America is facing a great challenge in the Middle East and here at home. I am convinced that in the weeks and months ahead, that challenge is only going to increase in intensity. God's people must be prepared to meet that challenge and to do so requires that we hear what the LORD is saying and to obey His voice. Furthermore, we must be resolved to STAND against all the wiles of the Adversary and STAND up for truth!
Consider that before Israel could leave Egypt, plagues were poured out on the land to convince Egypt of the LORD's sovereignty and perhaps to convince the Hebrews as well. Throughout these trials, God miraculously and dramatically distinguished His people from the people of Egypt. But before the plagues came, God chose a man that He would use to speak to His people and to lead them. That man was Moses.
Not everybody was willing to listen to him. Many questioned his judgment, but Moses pressed ahead with what God had told him to do. As a result of his resolve, his people suffered, for a season, at the hands of those opposed to God's Will.
So, I find it very interesting that when God appeared to Moses and charged him with the task of speaking to the Hebrew people and leading them into freedom despite the likely consequences, God chose to do it through a - BUSH! That's something to think about!
Is America in Prophecy?
Bible scholars have often wondered why, seemingly, America is not mentioned in Bible prophecy. There are certain passages that some think MAY allude to the United States, but those passages are at best, vague. Thus, it seems that the U.S. does not figure prominently in the end-time scenario. On the other hand, is it possible that America does play a vital role characterized by the very fact that she is NOT mentioned in Scripture?
Many have postulated that by the time the Antichrist comes on the scene, America has fallen victim to a nuclear holocaust and simply doesn’t exist anymore. More recent prophecies have bolstered this view through the years. While this is certainly possible, I tend not believe that America will be totally destroyed. I believe that America will be humbled and chastened - perhaps through the use of non-conventional weapons - but not destroyed completely. If for Abraham’s sake, God would have spared Sodom for ten righteous, I believe He will ultimately spare a remnant of this nation for the sake of the righteous who are here.
With that being said, I am of the opinion that America will indeed see difficult and perilous times. We will not escape the universal shaking that is currently underway. In fact, in my opinion, it will be this shaking that brings about the final declination of American political and military superiority. It is not our national destiny to continue in the role as the world’s sole superpower! So, assuming this is correct what happens to our nation?
Since September 11, I have believed and have taught that IF President Bush followed through on his declared war on terror, he would be obliged to take the war to nations like Iraq, Syria, Libya, and maybe even “allies” such as Saudi Arabia.
I have also taught that, though we may realize limited or even great success in this endeavor, this war would eventually expand into a global conflict that may very well result in our demise, at least where our superpower status is concerned.
Should this prove to be true, I believe the primary cause of our failure will not be due to external forces like Al Qaeda, but the internal foes who live in our own neighborhoods and within our own hearts. And thus, the war on terror may serve two purposes - to set the stage for the end-time agenda of God (thus our vital role in the last days) and to bring about the circumstances through which the United States is humbled and relegated to a second-tier-nation status (the reason Scripture fails to mention us).
According To The Fathers
Many of this nation’s founding fathers understood that a great Providential purpose was the basis for establishing this nation. They also understood that, though guided and protected by Heaven, America’s ultimate destiny would be determined by the citizens of this nation and the choices they made.
The Father of the American Revolution, Samuel Adams wrote, “A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when they lose their virtue they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.”
The Father of our country felt the country would endure “until the people of America shall have lost all virtue: until they shall have become totally insensible to the difference between freedom and slavery: until they shall have been reduced to such poverty of spirit as to be willing to sell that pre-eminent blessing, the birthright of a freeman, for a mess of pottage: in short, until they have been found incapable of governing themselves and ripe for a master.”
Washington also argued, “Can it be that Providence has not connected the permanent felicity of a Nation with its virtue?” In other words, can this nation endure if we cease to be a chaste and upright people?
These and other men understood that whatever good this country may serve, ultimately the character of the nation - either virtuous or not - would determine what happens to this great experiment in self-government.
Though there are many Americans who respect the values upon which our nation was founded, there is another American walking the streets of our cities. This American cares nothing for the principles of the founding fathers nor for the God they called upon in times of crisis. This American asks, “Who is the LORD that I should serve Him?”
The fact that there are two nations residing under one flag tells me that there is going to be a monumental clash of opposing ideals. In the past, there have been skirmishes, but there is going to be a divisive and decisive battle between the two elements and, in my opinion, it will be sooner rather than later. As in the last Civil War, the issue will again be defined in black and white, but not with respect to a man’s skin color. No, this time it will be over the black and white of right and wrong.
Consider the recent Supreme Court decision, which decriminalizes homosexual acts. Most analysts concede that this decision places at risk the notion that marriage is defined as one man united with one woman. Other perversions such as bestiality and consensual incest are no longer impervious to judicial review now that the door is open. Consider that an openly practicing homosexual was made a Bishop in the Episcopal church recently, receiving the support of most of the denomination. A moral battle seems inevitable.
It would also seem that words of warning spoken by President Reagan twenty years ago now carry the threat of prophecy. In December 1984, Mr. Reagan pronounced that, “Without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure. . . . If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.”
Is it coincidental that the apparent collapse of our society is happening concurrently with the escalation of Islamic terrorism and global focus upon the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? I think not. The stage is being gradually set for the great and final redemption and consequently, an American uncivil war.
The Sinful Kingdom
There are two Americas: One is destined to destruction. Yet, this does not mean that the other is going to prevail through the courts, the school system or in public opinion. No, the battle that is brewing is spiritual and must therefore be waged on a spiritual plane. In short, the LORD is orchestrating this final clash, not only in America, but across the globe. It is time for the world to know that He is God and there is none beside Him. Consequently, those who would resist His agenda will fall by the wayside.
So, what does this mean for America? Those Americans who say Scripture should not determine social mores will come to a tragic end. Those who declare that, for the sake of political expediency, eternal covenants made between God, His people and the Promised Land are invalid, will themselves be destroyed. A nation in the midst of a global war on terror who simultaneously pursues the political and social course described above is in danger of harsh retribution.
In Amos 9, the Jewish prophet encountered an Israeli nation who had abandoned the principles and virtues as defined in Scripture and their covenant with God. Through the prophet, the LORD declared to ancient Israel that those of His people who had strayed - “the sinful kingdom” as they are described - would be destroyed.
He specifically noted that, “The sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say the evil shall not overtake us” (Amos 9:10). At the same time, it is specified that there were those in Israel who would be preserved during this sifting. These - the grain as they are referred to - are those who obviously have remained true to God and to His covenant. Thus, a distinction is made between these faithful and the unfaithful.
When Israel dwelled in Egypt, a distinction was made between them and the Egyptians. This was made even more obvious when the plagues began to reign down on the land of the Pharaohs. While Egypt endured darkness, flies, locusts and cattle disease, Israel was untouched by these blights. The LORD was proving to Egypt and to His people that He was God. There was a war going on, but the LORD God was the one orchestrating the battle.
I believe that this is most likely what America is facing. As the consequence of choices made over the past several decades piles up, it is only a matter of time until, like Israel of old, America will be faced with God’s justice. Those who oppose Him - the sinful kingdom - will be at risk when judgment begins. Those who are humble before Him, obeying Him and resisting the degradation of our society will likely be singled out as the cause of all the problems arising from God’s justice. This would only be accentuated if God’s people were preserved and protected in the midst of the turmoil.
Consequently, there will be a civil war of sorts. But as I have already pointed out, it will be the LORD who will conduct the battle on behalf of the righteous. As a result, I believe there will be another liberation of those enslaved. This liberation, this redemption will be complete, final and unprecedented.
In the mid 1800s, a newspaper printed an alleged vision experienced by George Washington while at Valley Forge. According to the account, Washington believed it was revealed to him that the United States would experience three major crises, all of which would threaten the very existence of the nation.
The first was believed to be the American Revolution, the second the Civil War and the third, a yet to be determined crisis. This third threat, originating from Africa, Asia and Europe, was considered to be the most lethal to the Republic. Only when the oppression wrought by this threat had driven certain Americans to their knees was the tide turned. Furthermore, Washington implied that this would occur to America at some distant time.
Obviously, this cannot be given the same reverence as Scripture; yet, it is interesting that this threat - one that almost destroys the Republic - comes from the Eastern Hemisphere. Is it possible that this “attack” from the East could be the threat of Islamic terrorism within our borders? It is conceivable that terror cells within this country could strike with such ferocity and frequency that every facet of American life could be threatened with annihilation.
If President Bush continues with his pledge to make war on terror, the threat of retaliation grows. I find it very interesting and a bit ironic that while on the carrier, U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, President Bush referred to the campaign in Iraq as the “battle of Iraq,” of course, implying there are other battles to come.
Needless to say, America is a nation at the point of decision. In my opinion, we are witnessing the beginning of the end of American superiority. In the end, it is not America but Israel who will be the premier nation of the earth. Still, nobody can be certain of just how, when and where certain things will transpire. The only thing we can truly predict with certainty is that our Heavenly Father will see to it that all things are accomplished according to His Will. And so with that, I will close with words attributed to the last “Civil War President.”
In December 1862, Abraham Lincoln said, “God only knows the issue of this business. He has destroyed nations from the map of history for their sins. Nevertheless, my hopes prevail generally above my fears for our Republic. The times are dark, the spirits of ruin are abroad in all their power, and the mercy of God alone can save us.” Amen
